I just learned of Dr. Metcalf's passing. I am heartbroken. I will always remember his jovial personality. Especially during our lessons many years ago.
My prayers, even though late as they are, go out to Ros and Meghan.

Dr. Metcalf conducted what we called "Monster Band" back in the late 70's at Rowan. I was a guitar major who had just picked up the flute as a second instrument and I was really faking being able to play it the first year. But he was so open and kind and patient with me. Instead of kicking me out (like he should have), he eventually turned me and many of the other "Monsters" into something close to real players. His kindness and example during the 3 years I worked with him made a BIG difference in my career and I was very sorry to read of his passing.

Dr. Metcalf was always a great teacher and mentor. One of the reasons I went to West Chester was to study with him, and he made my tuba playing come a long way in the time I spent with him. Even after I had been gone for a few years and came back to visit, he always had kind words and wanted to know how things were going with my teaching and my playing. I am happy to have known him, and am sad to hear of his passing.

It is with great sadness that I received the news of Owen's passing. I have known Owen & Roz since my days as a student of his at Glassboro State. Owen is one of the nicest persons I've ever known - always positive, always encouraging, always supportive. He loved what he did and did what he loved. There are a few persons in each of our lives who make an impact that lasts a lifetime. For myself, and many others, Owen is truly one of them. We miss you Owen, and look forward to seeing you again one day. Save a seat for me in the tuba section of heaven's orchestra. And he shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall be no more death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away. Revelation 21:4

I worked as a secretary for the Music Department at Glassboro for years. Owen was one of the nicest people that I've ever met. He always seemed to be grounded, caring and had a great sense of humor. My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and child.

Dr. Metcalf was my Tuba professor at WCU from 1998-2002. He will be sorely missed. He was a great Tuba player and teacher and will always be remembered as a kind and gentle person. He was always there when you needed advice and would always point you in the right direction. Personally I will always remember the fun times we had during our lessons, and during Tuba ensemble. He was one of the easiest people to get along with and was always laid back (even if you didn't practice). He was an excellent mentor and a first class guy and will always be remembered for the gift of music he gave to so many. You will be missed Dr. Metcalf. R.I.P. Brian Hollar

I had the pleasure of being a student at Rowan when Dr. Metcalf was a professor. His kind smile and willingness to help any student will always remain with me. He was a big man with a heart to match. May he join the greats in the orchestra in heaven.

Owen was one of the first faculty members that I met upon arriving at Glassboro State in 1990 when I began my position as dean of the college. He was very gracious and welcoming that day and he continued to be in all my dealings with him over the years. He always gave a great deal to his students and to the institution. He will be greatly missed. Donald Gephardt

Dr. Metcalf was one of the most influential teachers I've had through my academic career. While at West Chester, I learned the value of self-motivation through Dr. Metcalf. You would only progress as far as your own effort would take you. If you showed up willing to work, he would wear you out with how hard he'd go. The three short years I had to work with him were a time of a lot of growth in myself as a musician. Thank you, Dr. Metcalf!

I can't begin to describe how much Owen meant to me as a teacher and a friend. His compassion, patience, and sense of humor were qualities that I will always remember. I also always valued his total lack on pretentiousness. When I visited him in the nursing home recently, he said that I was "good people"-- probably the highest honor possible in his book. His sense of humor was also evident in that visit. I brought in some pictures to show him. After he asked me to turn on the light, prop him up with an extra pillow, and hand him his glasses, he looked me with a sly smile and said, "now peel me a grape." Pure Owen. Any of his students will recall being in a lesson with him and completey screwing up a passage. Inevitably, after a long pause, Owen, barely containing his glee, would say, "a thing of beauty is a joy forever." Well, Owen and his kindness, caring, and friendship was a thing of beauty, and will always be a joy forever.
