Robert Palmer, 75, of Vineland, NJ passed away suddenly at home on March 21, 2023. He was born on June 21, 1947 in Potsdam, NY and was the oldest of the 3 children of Betty Lou Mackey and Charles M. Palmer of Norwood, NY.
Rob grew up in Norwood, NY and graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School in 1965. He attended Clarkson University before joining the Marine Corps and serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Vietnam War where he served bravely as a CH-46 helicopter pilot.
After leaving the Marine Corps, he worked many occupations in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey, including being a 3rd generation railroad engineer. One of the highlights of his career was running passenger trains on the Adirondack Railway during the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.
Work brought him and his family to New Jersey in 1983 working for Shore Fast Line Railroad and Better Materials Corporation. Ultimately Rob retired in 2009 as a signal maintainer for New Jersey Transit and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen.
Throughout his life, Rob was an avid outdoorsman, calling the Adirondack Mountains his stomping ground. Rob also enjoyed sailing, scuba diving and kayaking with his family.
During retirement, Rob spent much of his time as an active member of the Quinton Sportsman's club, where he rediscovered his love for marksmanship and competitive shooting through the IDPA. He served as a safety officer and match director.
Above all, Rob was a devoted husband and father. Rob is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jean; his daughter Danielle of Vineland; brother Larry of NY; brother-in-law Bob of NY, many nieces and nephews and his life-long friend Larry. He is also survived by Man's Best Friend, his granddog, Levon. He was predeceased by his daughter Stacey; parents Betty Lou and Charlie; and sister Anne.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Quinton Sportsmen's Club, Rob Palmer Donation Fund, 346 Jericho Road, Salem, NJ 08079 or in Rob's name to the Parishville Sportsman's Club, P.O. Box 559, Parishville, NY 13672 or to a charity of your choice.
