Lorenzo Robert Moratelli, born August 31, 1924 to the late Guilius and Lucy Moratelli of Vineland, NJ, passed peacefully into heaven on Friday, January 22, 2021. He was a beloved father to Elaine Mandarino, Lauren Forgnoni (Ronald), and Robert Moratelli. He was the adored pop of Stacy O'Brien (Jeff), Victoria Price, Jennifer Colonna (Michael), Angela Forgnoni,, Robert Moratelli, Margaret Price, Victoria Moratelli and the late Michael Price). He was an amazing great grandfather to Chase, Chandler, Hallie, and Hunter O'Brien. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Pauline Tamanini and Barbara Shipp, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters. Catherine, Olive, Angelina, Florence, Agnes, Alfred, Julia and Lucille.
Larry proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. He was the embodiment of the Greatest Generation. He joined the Army in July 26, 1944 at Fort Dix. In January of 1945 he boarded the Queen Mary and sailed to Southampton England. He was awarded both a Bronze Star for his valiant service and a Purple Heart. After he was wounded in battle, saving his fellow soldiers he was sent to the 66th General Hospital outside of Paris, France. While he recuperated, he would sing and play guitar with some of the other soldiers. Minnie Cohan came through with a touring USO group. She heard him playing and singing and she asked him to play at the Vienna Opera House on New Year's Eve 1945. He was always proud to say that a farmer from Vineland played guitar at the Vienna Opera House. Pop swam in the Danube River to celebrate the end of WWII. He would fondly recall that the Danube wasn't really all that blue. He talked of being comforted by attending a Catholic mass at the end of the war and feeling close to home because it was said in Latin and he understood every word.
Larry was a good and faithful servant and had been a long-standing member at Saint Padre Pio Parish in Vineland. He had spent many years involved in the planning and running of the annual festival, proudly took care of the cemetery and grounds, and was a 4th Degree Knight with Council 6621in East Vineland.
Pop loved his hometown of Vineland and proudly referred to it as God's Country. He made a remarkable life here, he was a farmer, had his own carpentry business, and had lived for more than fifty years in a house filled with family and love that he had built himself. He will be missed beyond measure but we are comforted knowing that he is with our beloved Nonie and all of our family that had gone before him.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions everyone is required to wear a mask and social distance.
