Dear John[ I am so sorry to hear of your passing, but I want you to know I always held you in the highest of respect. We did not always see eye to eye, but we never ley that come between us. My prayers go with you and family and I know GOD looked over you on earth and had a reason to take you home. May you rest in peace, and I know from working with you at Cumberland you made the college a better place for many students both in your classes and on campus. Rest in Peace sid

I was making a special effort to contact the family of John to send my condolences, and to bring you some comfort from the scriptures which I found to be consoling with a wonderful hope for the future. Notice what it says in John 5:28, 29, "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out..." Also, Revelation 21:4 says, "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." So this is very encouraging what God promises for the future, and in God's appointed time we will see the reality. Please visit the jw.org website for answers to many Bible questions. Again, my condolences for your loss.

The outpouring of condolences, love, and accolades at John's passing are overwhelming. I started at CCC taking every class Professor Gibbs taught. While I was certainly not one of his educational stars, he somehow decided we could be friends. After I graduated from CCC in 1993, and Rowan University with a BA in English in 1998, John was the reason I pursued a career teaching English after 32 plus years in the business world. Somewhere between graduation from CCC and Rowan, John and I saw each other at The Ramada Inn and he said he would call me. He did and we had dinner and the rest is history. We became friends and his friends became my friends and my friends became his friends and my sister Josie and brother-in-law Norm Neill became his family. It was a long lasting friendship and ended when I was with him at Cooper University Hospital when he left us on April 27, 2019. I am still not sure why he chose me as a friend as I was certainly not his intellectual peer. It did not matter to him. We differed on many subjects, but we maintained a friendship. Dinner will never be as enjoyable or as much fun as the times we spent with Josie and Norm, Anne and Todd, Walt and Gretchen, Joe and Barbara, Jean-Mark and Grace, Tim and Charlotte, Josh and Kelsey, Rita and Gus, Chris Ward Garrison and Bill Garrison, Sharon Kewish, Richard King, Jim and Patty Piccone, Dot Cohen, Pat Sink, Sarah Shapiro, Ben Berry, and his parents. He told me his 80th birthday surprise party guest list included everyone he would have selected had he known. Our visits to his brother Bart and sister-in-law Elaine Gibbs in New Hope, PA, and meeting them in Atlantic City for dinner were so enjoyable. I was so glad to have the opportunity to meet his beloved niece Barbara and her family and his nephew Barclay and his family, I am a blessed and a better person for having John expand my circle. He will be missed and never forgotten. Rest easy my friend,Professor, and mentor. I will miss you.

To pay tribute to such a complex man with just a few simple words is impossible, but Professor Gibbs was a man of words, and his words provided so much for so many. Professor Gibbs gave his energy and his passion to countless students at his beloved Cumberland County College, providing so many with the skills they would need to be successful not only in their careers but also in life. His guidance helped so many find purpose and meaning, yet he did not seek recognition or fame for his efforts. He fought for what he believed in, and never hesitated to speak his mind. He was a true professional in every sense of the word. Indeed, the world is such a better place by far because Professor John Gibbs was here.

I hold Professor Gibbs in high regards and I'm saddened at his passing. He made a profound impact on many students and colleagues at Cumberland County College.
He treated everyone fairly and I owe my writing skills to his teaching. He was thoughtful, fair, intelligent and a sincere gentleman.
God rest his soul.
Sincerely,
Bill Reyes

John Gibbs was an extraordinary man. He was not only an exceptional teacher, but a friend who understood that education transcends the classroom. Indeed, he was a craftsman. He knew how to read his students and mold their ideas into a perfect forum for discussion. I don’t hesitate to say that his acumen guided me to tread the path I’m on today. His contributions to the academic, theatrical, and humanitarian communities will be forever missed.
