Dear Joan and Family,
It was with great sadness that a friend living in Vineland sent me the notice that Joe had passed away. Joe and I met in the 7th or 8th grade and played football together at Memorial Junior High School. We were friends through high school and I was also in the VHS Class of 1963. I remember talking with Joe at our 50th reunion in 2013. I do not remember whether we spoke of our respective careers, and I was surprised that I did not know that Joe went into the Army in 1967 and served in Vietnam. I was commissioned in the Marie Corps in 1967 and spent 1968 and 1969 on the ground in Vietnam.
I offer my sincere condolences to you all.

We, of the South Jersey Misfits motorcycling group, have lost a good friend, a good man, a straight shooter and a hell of a rider. We will miss you "Gravel Joe."
Ride on ahead, Joe. We'll catch up in a bit.

Joan and Family,
I am so so sorry. We have not seen each other very often since high school but Joe was always warm and smiling whenever we saw each other. Time goes by too fast. I regret not staying in touch.
Please accept my condolences.

I am so very sorry for all those affected by Joe's loss. My son's soccer coach for many years; he always would ask how Andrew was doing when I ran into him. I thought of Joe as not only a friend, but also as a mentor. It wasn't what he said but how he lived his life. I will truly miss him, as I am sure so many other people. Old soldiers are not suppose to die.
