Obituary
Obituary of Delmo Mattioli DR.
Dr. Delmo Mattioli, age 90, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 9, 2008. He was surrounded by his family who will miss him deeply. He was born in Landisville, NJ, in 1917. He moved to Italy at the age of 7 with his grandmother and spent the next 20 years growing up and studying in Bologna, Italy. He earned his medical degree at the University of Bologna in 1942. It is also where he met and married Licia Galletti in 1943. In December of 1945, he returned to Landisville, the town he loved so much. In 1948 he opened his practice in Landisville and joined the medical staff at Newcomb Hospital where he enjoyed full privileges in internal medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and minor surgery. He was the youngest resident to do so at that time. In those years he delivered over 3,000 babies of whom many are family and friends. He was the president of Newcomb Hospital medical staff for two years and chairman of the Family Practice group for one year and served on many committees. He was the town doctor for over 50 years. He was also the Buena Regional school physician. His office remained open until all patients were seen. It was not uncommon for the workday to end at 11:00 p.m., and house calls were a regular part of his routine. He received many awards and accolades to include a special recognition dinner celebrating his life as a physician in his community and starting a scholarship fund at Buena Regional High School. He had a road dedicated in his name in Minotola next to the Borough Hall. But he was a humble man. His heart and soul was in his community. Of all the tributes he received, none was more special to him than the outpouring of love from all of you. In his final days, he welcomed your visits and calls beyond his ability to tell you. He loved his family, all of you. He cherished his connections with friends. He was proud of his Italian heritage. He was a religious man who believed deeply in God. But beyond all things, his dedication to his wife Licia was an example to all of us. From their early courtship, through many trials, he remained devoted and by her side. It was rare to see one without the other. For those who know him, and many did, you have witnessed the depth of his caring. Their love affair spanned 64 years. None will feel his loss as much as she will.
