Obituary of William Edward Schwarzman

William Edward Schwarzman, "Bill" for most of his life, was born in Philadelphia on September 4, 1929. When Bill was 3 years old the family moved to Vineland, where his parents, Isadore "Iz" and Sadie Schwarzman (née Levin), founded their retail store, I.C. Schwarzman's, on Landis Avenue, selling women's wear and household soft goods. Bill worked in the store throughout his childhood alongside his older brother and sister, Samuel "Sas", and Annette "Nan". Bill was bar mitzvah'd at Congregation Beth Israel, which his parents had helped establish. After Vineland High School he attended Rutgers College, where he received a Bachelors of Science degree. Married to Anita Schrier, of Toms River, NJ, in 1951, he worked for Lit Brothers in Philadelphia before they moved back to Vineland and he entered the family business. While an avid golfer through the mid-sixties, Bill eventually became a dedicated tennis player, which he enjoyed playing with all three of his children, Seth "Skip", Carol, and Mathew. For years he played very early in the mornings, before work, outdoors in all but the coldest weather, with his good friend, Bill Snyder. When he and his family lived on Embassy Terrace in Vineland, Bill had a Vespa scooter in lieu of a second car, and he was known to take neighborhood children for rides on weekends. For the centennial of Vineland, Bill was a member of the Brothers Of The Brush, all of whom grew beards for the celebration. Bill kept his and became rather well known as one of the few bearded men of the times. I.C. Schwarzman's closed for good in about 1981. Bill and Anita moved to Moorestown, NJ, and then to their own house in Camden. They divorced in 1989. Eventually Bill met Harriet Stuart, of Dresher, PA, and they were loving partners for 30 years. Bill continued to play tennis until he was almost 80, at about the same time as he ended his second work career as an insurance agent. He and Harriet lived in Dresher, and then Elkins Park, where they were close to both of their families. Fortunate enough to have gotten to spend two years with his great grandson, Avery, Bill said many times he felt so lucky to have such a loving family. He will be missed by all of them. He is survived by his loving partner of 30 years, Harriet Stuart; son, Seth "Skip" Schwarzman (Lynn Buono); daughter, Carol Schwarzman; son, Mathew Schwarzman (Mimi Zarsky); grandchildren, Ameila Buono Schwarzman, Hannah Buono Schwarzman, Jesse Stewart, Ross Fine, Remi Fine; great-grandson, Avery Barbeau; and his other family members, Wendy Fine, Debbie, Rick, Morgan Adam & Brett Weiss, Nancy, Kevin, Josh & Byran Portney. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Isadore & Sadie (Levin) Schwarzman; brother, Samuel Schwarzman and his sister, Annette Schwarzman Goldberg. A graveside service and burial will be held on Monday, June 24, 2024 at 11:30 am from Alliance Cemetery, 970 Gershal Ave, Norma. ARRANGEMENTS are under the supervision of Rone Funeral Service, 1110 East Chestnut Avenue, Vineland, NJ 08360. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bill/s memory to the SPCA.
