Obituary of Jacques Bernstein

Jacques (Jack) Bernstein, 92, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Monday, June 5th , 2023 at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland. "Jack" was born in Brooklyn, NY to Elsie (Hertz) and Harry Bernstein on July 29th, 1930. Shortly after graduating High School, he joined the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. It was there that the first of his 3 daughters would be born. Jack moved to Vineland in the late 1950's and called it home for the rest of his life. He was co-owner of Buena Pickle Co. and owner of JackSpot Luncheonette but will always be remembered as a Bartender for The K & O Bar/Grill, 5 Points Inn and Denny's. He had a love for people and conversation, a constant positive, carefree outlook on life and never had a bad word to say about anyone but would defend his honor, family and friends with vigor. He was an excellent athlete who excelled in baseball during his early years and continued to play softball and basketball well into adulthood. He was a avid fan of all Philadelphia Sports teams but "his team" were the Yankees of old. He was a prior member of Son's of Jacob Synagogue, an associate member of Temple Beth Hillel-Beth Abraham and a longtime member of Beth Israel Congregation where he was on the Board and involved in the Men's Club, the Jewish War Veterans Post and Chevra Kadisha of Alliance Cemetery. Upon retirement, he volunteered to help others in need by donating his time at the Red Cross and a local Soup Kitchen until he could no longer do so. He loved to laugh, act and sing with his deep, booming voice and was involved in the many plays Beth Israel put on for the community in the 1970's and 80's where he would meet the love of his life for the last 45 years, his spouse, Ellie Bernstein who recently preceded him. It was through this marriage, he got the son he never had and raised him as his own. He was known by countless people with everyone agreeing "he was the best" and will be sadly missed by all. He is survived by his loving family, daughter's Leslie Disharoon (Dave) and Hillary Cohen (Dick), step-son Barry Lubin and step-daughter Judy Lam (Mike). Grandchildren Justin (Kimberly) Disharoon, Taylor Cohen and his fiancé Jenna Valeri, Travis Cohen and his wife Ashley Tooke, Max Mazza (Alaina), Hunter Mazza, Allen Lam and his wife Jaimie Kittle, Lauren Lam and Isabel Lubin along with 3 great grandchildren. He is preceded by his wife Elinor Bernstein, brother Warren Bernstein, sister Myrtle Lang and daughter Lesa (Bernstein) Mazza. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday, June 8, 2023 from 11:00am to 12:00pm followed by a funeral service at 12:00pm from Rone Funeral Service, 1110 East Chestnut Avenue, Vineland. Interment will follow in Alliance Cemetery, Norma.
