Obituary of Elinor Bernstein

Elinor (Bardfeld) Bernstein, 86, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, December 24th, 2022 surrounded by her family. Ellie as she was known, was a lifelong Vineland resident born to the late Bessie (Rothman) and Jacob Bardfeld on March 12th, 1936. She was a 1954 graduate of Vineland High School and then from Glassboro State Teachers College (Rowan University) with a degree in elementary education. Her passion in life was teaching children for over 30 years in the Vineland Public School System in 2nd and 3rd grades and later as a Basic Skills teacher and she treated every child as if they were her own. Her dedication to her job and the want to improve other's lives touched so many people in so many ways. She also taught as a Nursery School teacher at Beth Israel Synagogue early on in her career. She belonged to Beth Israel her entire life and was a very active member of Sisterhood, Hadassah and Hebrew Women's Benevolent Society holding several positions throughout the years. After retirement from teaching, Ellie volunteered back in the schools tutoring many children needing help and for The American Red Cross. One of her most noble contributions was assisting in the religious ritual of performing a Tahara, the cleansing of a deceased in preparation for internment, a show of ultimate compassion and respect. She loved to sing, act and dance and was involved in the many plays Beth Israel put on for the community in the 1970's and 80's where, after the passing of her first husband Lew, she would meet the love of her life for the last 45 years, her spouse Jack Bernstein. She loved to travel, was an avid Ma Jong player, reader of novels, fan of Philly sports teams and knitter, making countless scarfs and afghan's for family and friends. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and "kibbitz". She was an ethical, moral and principled woman who stood firm for what she believed was right and didn't back down from spirited debate when she disagreed. But mostly, she loved her husband, her children, her grandchildren and the many dear relatives and friends she had. She is survived by her loving family, husband of 45 years Jacques "Jack" Bernstein; her daughter Judy Lam (Mike); son Barry Lubin and stepdaughters Leslie Disharoon (Dave) and Hillary Cohen(Dick); grandchildren Allen Lam (Jaimie Kittle), Lauren Lam and Isabel Lubin. She was predeceased by her first husband Lewis Lubin; brother Dr. Gilbert Bardfeld and stepdaughter Leesa (Bernstein) Mazza. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 from 11am to 12pm followed by a funeral service at 12:00 pm from Rone Funeral Service, 1110 East Chestnut Avenue, Vineland. Interment will follow in Alliance Cemetery, Norma.
