Obituary of Mabel "May" Vassallo

Mabel "May" (Higbee) Vassallo, 84, of Minotola passed away on August 3, 2022 at home. She was born in Millville to the late Herbert Higbee Sr. and Naomi Fink (Strouse). She attended Vineland High School where she met the love of her life, James "Chip" Vassallo. They were married in 1955 at Our Lady Of Victories Church in Landisville. A hard worker, "May" was employed in the office at Crown Clothing in Vineland, but left to work with her husband on the family farm. Later, when they gave up farming, she spent 30 years with Minotola/Edward Burton, Inc., she left when the company moved to Florida. May then went to work for the Buena Regional School District, but left that position to take care of her ill mother-in-law. Her next position was in the office of AmeriTelephone, Inc. and her last employment was as office manager for AATI/Avalon home cleaning. A convert to Catholicism, May applied that same work ethic to her parish, serving on the core team, Pastoral Council, Liturgy Committee and Bereavement Ministry, which she chaired. She also, served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and Minister of Hospitality. May was a member of the Red Hats, where she and her friend Helen, often creatively, prepared for monthly meetings. She enjoyed traveling, especially by Cruise Ship, going to the theatre, reading and most of all spending time with her family and friends. May is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, James and Kim Vassallo of Minotola; grandchildren, Christa Marandino (Toby) of Germany; Melissa Jackowski (Tony) of Vineland, Jennifer Cooper (Joey) of Minotola and Jimmy Vassallo (Chelcie) of Vineland; great-granddaughters, Annabelle Josephine Cooper; Lily Ann Vassallo and Odette Marion Vassallo; great-grandsons, Aj Jackowski and Noah Steinoff; brother, Herbert Higbee Jr. (Donna); many friends, especially Helen Trionfo and Theresa Hall. May was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, James "Chip" Vassallo Jr.; daughter, Sharon Woshnak; sister, Ann Dockery and her niece and nephew, Naomi and Edward Dockery. A church visitation will be held on Monday, August 8, 2022 from 10:30am to 11:15am followed by a funeral mass at 11:30 am from Our Lady Of The Blessed Sacrament - Church Of Our Lady Of Victories, 202 Northwest Boulevard, Landisville.
