Obituary of Sr Grace Marie Scandale

Sister Grace Marie Scandale, 81, a member of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, Villa Rossello, Newfield, NJ, went to her eternal rest on the evening of June 17 at Cooper Hospital, Camden, NJ. Sister Grace Marie had been living with her religious community at Villa Rossello Provincial House in Newfield, NJ where she had been missioned for most of her religious life. Sister Grace Marie, born in Taylor, PA on March 11, 1941, was the daughter of the late James and Julia (Cieliss) Scandale. She entered the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, in Newfield, NJ in 1967 and professed her vows there in 1970. After completing her studies and earning her Bachelor's degree in education from Caldwell College, Caldwell, NJ, Sister Grace Marie then served as a Religion teacher at Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Newfield, NJ. She also taught in elementary parish schools staffed by the religious order in Berkeley Heights, NJ, and in Steelton and Berwick, PA for a few years. Sister Grace Marie then returned to Our Lady of Mercy Academy to teach religion. In 1980, she was named as principal of the Academy, a position which she held until her retirement in 2017. Sister Grace Marie, a competent educator, was genuinely dedicated to the academic formation of young women at the high school level. She was faithful to her religious vocation and to her ministry as an educator. Surviving is her brother Joseph Scandale and wife Joan, of Clarks Summit, PA, a niece and her husband Kim and Sean McVeigh, a nephew James and his wife Megan, and great nieces and nephews: Joseph, Ava, Paxton and Charlie. She is also survived by her religious community, the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy. A memorial mass will take place at a later time. The Rite of Christian Burial will take place privately at Pietà Cemetery on the grounds of the Order's Provincial House, Villa Rossello, Newfield, NJ.
