My condolences to the Pierantozzi family. I had the honor to be John's partner in his final high school varsity game at Sacred Heart HS. My assigned partner didn't show up so John took his place even though he had been 'retired' from basketball officiating for a few years. South Jersey and the entire state has lost a coaching and officiating icon. R.I.P. John.

Bunny and family,
We are so sad to hear about the passing of John. My wife, Coleen, knew him as the assistant football coach when she attended Vineland High School. It took her a long time to call him John, instead of Mr. Pierantozzi because of the respect she had for him. I came to know John later when I began refereeing basketball. He took me under his wing, and we became dear friends. Our daughters, Faith and Sierra, were fortunate enough to meet John on and off of the court. I have enjoyed many laughs with John over the years, and will forever have fond memories of our time together. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Hopefully, you will find some peace knowing that he touched so many lives in so many ways. He made a difference.
Respectfully,
Gary, Coleen, Faith, and Sierra Hegh

John loved basketball officiating. He was a mentor to me as an official and as an assignor. I was lucky enough to have officiated a few games with John, we ALWAYS had fun. G-d rest his soul, and may his memory be a blessing.

To John's family,
I was lucky to know John when I served as Salem High School's Athletic Director. He was a fantastic individual and a great Basketball official. Was fun to talk with, watch him work with young people....just an all around good guy. Am sure your hearts are heavy, but, am equally sure you have some fantastic memories of him.
May God grant him eternal rest and peace and may his memory be eternal.
Sincerely,
Liz Pappas, Pennsville

I am proud to say "I had the chance to get to know Coach Pierantozzi as a Member of the 1987 Vineland Fighting Clan JV Football Team". Whenever I saw John, either at a Basketball Game or Church, I would always call Him "Coach" out of Love and Respect. John was a Genuine Person who I admired and looked up to. I remember I was very thrilled when I made the JV Football Team. He gave Me a chance. He was very supportive and a good motivator for All who played for Him because He really cared about People. My Deepest Sympathies to All the Family of John Pierantozzi. He will be Greatly Missed to All who knew Him. For All the contributions He made to the Basketball Officiating Program and All of His Accomplishments, His Legacy will Live Forever.
Rest in Peace Coach

Mr. Pierantozzi was my health teacher at VHS. One day I was his "volunteer" for his demonstration of the heimlich maneuver. As I stood there, and as he calmly described how to approach someone who was choking, I had no idea what was about to happen. One minute I'm just standing there next minute, without warning, every ounce of air is rushing out of my lungs. If I had gum in my mouth I might have taken someone's eye out. I looked at him and thought to myself that was pretty sneaky.
Having moved away, I caught a Thanksgiving Day game on Youtube a few years ago. I was glad to hear his voice and that he was still involved in VHS sports. He did have his own unique way to call a game, and definitely a homer all the way.
So sad to hear this news.
He was a presence at VHS and a genuinely good person.

John had a unique way of calming people down. His demeanor was outstanding in the words that he would use to bring people in a calming state of mind. I officiated basketball games at St. Augustine and I had the pleasure of meeting John who talked to me and other officials. I am so glad that I did because he just was so welcoming to me and he knew how to get the best out of the officials. You do not find too many talented people in the way that they talk to people and their knowledge of officiating. John was this person. He had a great kindness to him and people respected and loved him for that great characteristic.
I will miss you dearly my friend. I know you are in heaven now and looking down on us.
May God comfort your family and bring peace to them.
Sincerely,
Kevin Muni
