Obituary of Sister Gattone
Sister Gabrielle Gattone, 84, a member of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, Villa Rossello, Newfield, NJ was called home to the Lord on August 4 at Cooper Medical Center, Camden, NJ.
Sister Gabrielle was born in Philadelphia, PA., the daughter of the late Agostino and Rosa A. (Gerace) Gattone. Having entered the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, in Newfield, NJ in 1951, she professed her vows on August 17, 1953. She received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Misericordia University, Dallas, PA and her M.A. from Penn State University. An excellent and committed educator, Sister Gabrielle taught in various schools in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. She also taught In Moulton, Alabama and in New Jersey at Rose of Lima, Newfield St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Mary's in Vineland, St. Mary Magdalene, Millville and at Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Newfield. In recent years she served as Coordinator of Religious Education at St. Mary's Parish and also at St. Padre Pio Parish in E. Vineland.
Sister Gabrielle is survived by the members of her religious community, and her sister May Onishchuk of Grand Island, Florida, her brother-in-law, Robert Martin of Fort Worth, Texas and her sister-in-law Rose Marie Gattone, of Red Hill, Pa. Also surviving are a number of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Carol Martin and by her brother John Gattone.
The Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Edward Namiotka, Pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Somers Point, NJ. will take place at Villa Rossello Chapel, Newfield, NJ on Tuesday, August 14 at 1:15 PM. Burial will follow in Pietà Cemetery on the grounds of Villa Rossello. Friends may call on Tuesday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Chapel.
