Obituary of Sister Gandolfo

Sister Carmelina Gandolfo, a member of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, Villa Rossello, Newfield, NJ went to her eternal rest on Saturday, March 5, at Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, York, PA where she had been a patient for a few months. Sister Carmelina, born in Conio Imperia, Italy, was the daughter of the late Francis and Carmela (Alberti) of Imperia, Italy. She entered the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, in Savonia, Italy on September 24, 1932, and professed her Vows on March 18, 1934. In 1935 she came to America to York, PA and became a member of the religious Order's North American Province. Totally dedicated to her religious vocation, Sister Carmelina was known for her spirit of fervent prayer, her loving care for others, her genuine love for her religious congregation, and her great devotion the the Blessed Virgin Mary. Having obtained her Bachelor's degree in education from College Misericordia, Dallas, PA, Sister Carmelina ministered as a dedicated teacher in schools staffed by the religious order in Springfield and Milford, Massachusetts, Most Precious Blood, Our Lady of Grace, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Schools in Hazelton, PA, and at St. Joan of Arc School, Hershey, PA. For a number of years she served as principal. She also did some parish ministry at St. Ann's Parish, Steelton, Pa for a brief period of time. At the end of her teaching career in 1984, she was sent to St. Joseph Parish, Berwick, PA as a Parish Visitor where she brought comfort and hope to the ill and elderly parishioners. She continued this work until her full retirement in 2008. The last few years of her life were spent at Mercy Residence, the Order's retirement home, York, PA. In addition to her parents, Sister Carmelina was preceded in death by brother, Rev. Giuseppe Gandolfo and her sister Bianca Alberti both of Italy. She is survived by her religious community, the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, brother, Giovanni Gandolfo, nephew Franco Gandolfo and niece Nilla Alberti, all of Italy. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 9:30am to 11:00am at Villa Rossello Chapel, Villa Rossello, Newfield, NJ A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 11:00 am from Villa Rossello Chapel, Villa Rossello, Newfield. Interment will follow in Pieta Cemetery, Newfield.
