David The Noble Mensch
I’ve known David for over 50 years and through all those years, I have NEVER ONCE seen him angry, mean, nasty or arrogant. We shared many high school classes together, making jokes every chance we could (especially in French class, while I was dying a cruel death, he lifted me up).
He was quite brilliant in chemistry and math, where we shared in the Math Club. He had a super keen insight into complex mathematical problems and usually dropped his pencil on the desk and said, “I got it!” with a boyish grin. You could always depend on David to see a job through to a successful conclusion – he was a diligent problem solver as well as a loving compassionate friend who would earestly listen to your problems and tried to offer solutions.
He was most of all, a humble and contrite man, just the kind G-d calls “beloved”. His sense of humor was so inviting, I guess that’s why I loved him so much. His great broad smile just warmed your heart with a glance.
He never lifted himself up above others or thought more highly of himself than he ought, another G-dly trait. He always was interested in you as a person and always cared for others – most of all for his family, whom he loved dearly.
David’s humility and compassion vaulted him to “Super Mensch” Status. The definition of “Mensch” is Yiddish for "a person of integrity and honor".
According to Leo Rosten, a "mensch" is "someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character. The key to being 'a real mensch' is nothing less than character, rectitude, dignity, a sense of what is right, responsible, decorous."
David not only fulfilled these traits, but superceded them, and you wouldn’t even know it because he was of such a humble heart!
My deepest desire for David is that we will all remember David’s nobility and somehow strive to emulate his quality of life and remember his kind, tender, humorous heart and how he filled us with a sense of warmth and well being.
David, we all loved you and will forever cherish your words and deeds in our hearts.
