Obituary of Rose Applebaum

Rose Helig Applebaum, 92, passed away peacefully in her home on January 2, 2007. She was the daughter of Isaac and Rebecca Helig, original settlers of the Alliance Farming Colony, and sister of Golda Stern, Mae Levy, Shirley Lerner, and Jacob Helig, and is survived by her youngest sister, Fay Levin. Rose was a graduate of Vineland High School and earned her nursing degree (RN) at Bridgeton Hospital. She did her nurse anesthetist training in New York, New Orleans and Atlanta. Rose was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Army Nursing Corp, and served in the Army's 97th Evac Hospital in the European Theater during WWII. During her service she was promoted to Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Rose maintained life long friendships with the men and women she served with while in the Army. The 97th Evac Reunions were a highlight for her and her family. Rose married Nathan Applebaum in Paris, France on May 6, 1945, and returned to the US in October of the same year. Rose and Nate were married for 20 years. Nathan passed away in 1965. Rose and Nate ran their poultry and egg farm for 17 years. Rose also worked as an RN and private duty nurse at Newcomb Hospital. She was a member of the Chevra Kadisha of Alliance and loved gardening, antiquing, sewing, reading, cooking and traveling with her sisters, daughters, and grandchildren. She excelled at story telling and 'making all things right' for her family and friends. She was the loving mother of daughters Ruby Morgan, and husband Stanley, Rhona Applebaum (Peabody) and husband Mark, and son Ray Steven Applebaum and wife, Isa-Monika. She is survived by six grandchildren, Stanley Morgan and his wife, Berit, Rebecca Morgan, Jessica Applebaum, Nathan Applebaum, and his wife Ashley, Paul Applebaum and Brent Peabody, and two great granddaughters, Sarah and Madison Morgan. Aunt Rosie will be missed by her nieces and nephews, her many neighbors and friends the world over, and her loving caretakers, Susan Samanitto. Merle Taylor. Michelle Richardson, and Jasmine Marsh. Graveside Services will be held at Alliance Cemetery in Norma, on Friday, January 5 at 2:30PM.
