Obituary of Sister Mary Elizabeth Stanziola

Sister Mary Elizabeth Stanziola, a member of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, Villa Rossello, Newfield, NJ, went to her eternal rest on December 24, at Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, York, PA where she had been a resident for several years. Sister Elizabeth, born in Hazleton, PA, was the daughter of the late Anthony and Maria (Colicigno) of Hazleton, PA. She entered the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, in York, PA on September 14, 1942, and professed her Vows on August 16, 1944. Sister Elizabeth earned a BS in Elementary Education from College Misericordia, Dallas, PA and taught for many years in elementary schools administered by the religious order in Milford and Springfield, MA, Berwick, Hazleton, Hershey, Old Forge, and at Holy Child Nursery in York, PA., in Millville, Swedesboro and Newfield, NJ, and in Dunkirk, N.Y. After her teaching career, Sister Elizabeth ministered for many years as Coordinator of Religious Education at Holy Name Parish, Mantua, and at St. Mary's Parish, Rosenhayn, NJ. She was noted for her love for the children whom she taught and for her untiring dedication to the ministry of Religious Education. In addition to her parents, Sister Elizabeth was preceded in death by her brothers, Carmen, Joseph, Nicholas, Frank and Anthony Stanziola, and by her sisters Mary Flaherty and Rose DeNicola all of Hazleton. Surviving are her sister, Sophia Klatch of Hazleton, PA, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her religious community, the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a viewing and Memorial Service that will be offered for Sister Elizabeth at Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Chapel, York, PA on Monday, December 28 at 1:30 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be take place at the order's Provincial House, Villa Rossello, Newfield, NJ, on Tuesday, December 29 at 12:00 PM presided over by Reverend John J. Tumosa. Burial will follow at Pieta Cemetery on the grounds of Villa Rossello. Friends may call on Tuesday morning at the chapel from 10:00 AM until before Mass.
