Obituary of Ernest L Alvino Sr.
The Hon. Ernest L. Alvino, Sr., 94, former judge of the New Jersey Superior Court, passed away peacefully on April 23 in Tabernacle, NJ. Judge Alvino is survived by his wife of 53 years, Diane (Maselli) of Newfield, sons Ernest Jr. and wife Maria (Bernardini) Alvino of Mullica Hill, and Gary Alvino of Tabernacle, and grandchildren Grace of Baltimore, MD and Ernest III of Mullica Hill. He is also survived by his brother Joseph and wife Esther (Gosman) Alvino of Huntington Beach, CA, mother-in-law Lena Maselli and brother-in-law Paul Maselli, both of Buena, and many brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Elsie (Thomas) Alvino, sisters Anna DiCandoloro, Viola Fusinatti, Irene DeLuca, and Gloria Parenti and brothers Thomas, Henry, Arthur, Rudy, David and Lawrence Alvino.
Born November 9, 1920, in Glassport, PA, Judge Alvino was a long-time resident of Newfield. In his youth, he worked along-side his brothers and sisters on the family's farm and was a skilled baseball player and avid fan. Following his graduation from Vineland High School in 1938, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps where served 3 years during World War II with the 342nd Bomb Group based in Foggia, Italy. As a decorated crew member on B-17 aircraft, he flew 50 bombing missions over southern and central Europe and earned the rank of Technical Sergeant upon being honorably discharged from the service in 1944.
Judge Alvino graduated from Rutgers University and Rutgers Law School, Camden, was admitted as an attorney to the New Jersey Bar in 1951 and entered private practice. He was a dedicated public servant, serving as Solicitor for Monroe Township,
National Park Borough, Newfield Borough, and the Delsea Regional Board of Education, as municipal judge for Newfield and Franklin Township, and as Gloucester County Assistant Prosecutor. He was elected to the Newfield Board of Education, Newfield Borough Council, and the Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and was a member of the Bar Associations of Cumberland and Gloucester Counties and a past President of the Newfield Kiwanis Club. In 1967, Judge Alvino was appointed to the New Jersey Superior Court and sat on the bench in Woodbury until retiring in 1997.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services beginning at (time) on TUESDAY, APRIL 28 at St. Isadore's R.C. Church of Christ the Good Shepard Parish, 1655 Magnolia Road, Vineland, followed immediately by a Mass of Christian burial. Internment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, 741 E. Walnut Road, Vineland.
