Obituary of Marion J. Alford

Marion J. (Ruskin) Alford, 83, of Vineland passed away on August 14, 2017. Marion was born in Philadelphia and moved to Clayton at the age of 11. She became a resident of Vineland after her marriage to her husband, Gerald. She graduated from Clayton High School and received her teaching degree from Glassboro State College. She taught for 40 years in the districts of Vineland, Newfield and Buena. Marion was an active member of the NEA, NJEA, Newfield Teachers Association and Buena Regional Teachers Association. During those years she helped to establish the Newfield Teachers Association and was instrumental in negotiating the first contract between the association and the Newfield Board of Education. She was also involved in the implementation of a new State Law which helps to protect teachers moved to a new district because of the merging of that district. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Gerald A. Alford; daughter, Donna Arcangeli; grandchildren, Rachael L. Smith, Leonard Smith II and David Arcangeli and her sister, Helen Mitchell; Marion was predeceased by her daughters, Catherine Smith, Karen Alford and Donna Lynn Alford; her parents, Helen and William Ruskin; sister, Dorothy Ruskin and her brother, William Ruskin Jr. Funeral Visitations will be held on Thursday evening from 6pm to 8pm and again on Friday morning from 9am to 10am followed by a funeral service at 10am from Rone Funeral Service, 1110 East Chestnut Avenue, Vineland. Interment will follow in Siloam Cemetery, Vineland.
