Obituary of Helen Jurysta

Helen Jurysta of Vineland passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at home after a long illness. She was born in Lodz, Poland on January 1, 1923. She was 17 years old when she was forced into the first of several concentration camps; she was liberated in 1945 from Dachau. Only she and her brother Alfred survived the Holocaust. She was married in 1946 to Saul Jurysta, a fellow Holocaust survivor, at the Landberg Displaced person's Camp in Germany. Under the sponsorship of her American uncle, Helen and Saul and their young daughter came to America on May 2, 1949, settling in Cleveland, Ohio for less than a year. In 1950, having saved and borrowed some money, Helen and Saul moved to Estell Manor to start a poultry farm; in 1952, they moved to Vineland establishing an upholstery and dinette set business which they ran for 42 years on North Delsea Drive. helen continued to manage the poultry business for another 14 years in Vineland in addition to co-owning and running the furniture business. She was a member of Beth Israel Congregation since 1958 and joined many organizations including Pioneer Women, hadassah, and Hebrew Women's Benevolent Society. helen was a very caring, compassionateperson who liked to donate to many causes from the Wounded Warrior project to the Salvation Army.
