Obituary of Betty Jayne Greenfield

Betty Jayne (Atherton) Greenfield of Vineland passed away on February 27, 2013. Betty Jayne was born May 10, 1923 in Washington, DC to Harry A and Mildred B. Atherton. She was raised in Washington DC and Silver Springs, Maryland. She shared her father's love of boating on the Chesapeake Bay. Betty Jayne enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and the theater. As a girl scout in Washington, DC, she helped plant a tree on the White House lawn with First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. Betty Jayne attended the University of Maryland and pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma. In the late 1940's, Betty Jayne worked at the Pentagon for Najeeb Halaby, aid to Secretary of Defense James Forrestal. While there, she was named employee of the month. She married Vincent Joseph Greenfield on September 17, 1949 in Washington at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. They lived in Silver Springs, Maryland before moving to Vineland, New Jersey in 1956. She was an avid volunteer at Sacred Heart Grammar School, where her children attended. With her constant presence at the school, Betty Jayne became the school's secretary for over twenty-five years until her retirement at age 79 in 2003. In her retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by son, V. Michael Greenfield; son & daughter-in-law, Gary & Kathleen Greenfield; son & daughter-in-law, Stephen & Claire Greenfield all of Vineland; son, Robert Greenfield of Robbinsville; son & daughter-in-law, David & Terry Greenfield of Deptford; daughter & son-in-law, Nancy & Alex Balentine of Atlanta, GA; daughter & fiance, Julia Raphaely & David Centafont of Bryn Mawr, PA; grandchildren, Michael Paul Greenfield, Renee Greenfield, Bryan Greenfield; Meredith Greenfield; grandson & wife, Richard & Mary Greenfield; granddaughter & husband, Lauren & Ron Withelder; grandson & wife, Kevin & Victoria Greenfield; grandson & fiancée, Christopher Greenfield & Meghan Moratelli; grandchildren, Morgan, Caitlynn, David, Joseph, Michael & Christine Greenfield, Julia & Chandler Balentine and Elizabeth & Kate Raphalely; great-grandchildren, Ray & Olivia Withelder; sister, Harriet "Buckie" Atherton Haynes. She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent J Greenfield; parents, Harry A & Mildred B. Atherton; and brother, Harry M Atherton. A Church Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10am to 11:30am followed by a Memorial Mass at 11:30 am from Christ The Good Shepherd Parish - Church Of Sacred Heart, 1010 East Landis Avenue, Vineland. Final Disposition will be private at the convenience of the family.
