Dear Lou,
I am deeply saddened to hear of your passing and wish to offer my heartfelt condolences.
My sister told me she had just spoken with you on FaceTime recently and was relieved to see you doing well, so I am still in a state of disbelief.
I still clearly remember when I visited to attend my sister's graduate school commencement with my wife and had the privilege of meeting you in person. It was my very first trip to America and I was quite nervous, but you and Barbara welcomed us so warmly and shared a wonderful meal with us. Those memories remain vivid in my heart.
Thank you so much for everything you did for my sister. She was truly fortunate to have been supported by you and Barbara.
My sister also told me how you always cared and asked about our family here in Japan even after she returned home.
I am truly grateful for your lasting kindness.
May you rest in peace.
Shigeki, and on behalf of Hisako's family in Japan

To my dearest Lou,
When I received the news, I broke down in tears, unable to believe it. It was only about two weeks ago that we spoke on FaceTime,
and you were making me laugh with your jokes just like you always did.
Our journey began 36 years ago when you and Barbara welcomed me as my homestay hosts. That was our very first meeting. The following year, I quit my job to start my life as a student in the U.S. That life lasted for 11 years—through my studies and my career as a teacher.
It was the greatest challenge of my life, but you and Barbara were always by my side, supporting me with such incredible warmth.
You both went above and beyond to ensure my life in America started smoothly. You invited me to every holiday celebration, teaching me so much and giving me countless, irreplaceable experiences. Even back then, you were such a warm family, loving and being loved by your three daughters and five grandsons. You were my inspiration.
That love and those bonds have been passed down through the generations, and today, I see that you are adored by your many great-grandchildren as well. You were truly a great presence, one who brought warmth to the hearts of everyone around you.
To me—someone who tends to take things too seriously—you showed me how to relax and embrace life through your jokes and your own way
of living. So many memories are rushing through my mind like a kaleidoscope. Even after I returned to Japan, you always sent me warm messages and cared deeply for me and my family here. From the photos Debbie sends, it is more than clear just how much you were cherished by your family.
Although losing you is heartbreaking for those of us left behind, I find comfort in knowing you will be reunited with Barbara and Michael. I am certain you will be surrounded by love and happiness there as well. Please rest in peace.
Lou, a part of me still feels as though you are still there, living happily in New Jersey.
Thank you for all the love you gave me. And thank you for accepting me as your Japanese daughter.
With all my love and gratitude,
Your Japanese daughter,
Hisako
