Obituary of Thomas Gildea

Thomas R. Gildea, 78, of Richland, NJ, died Friday morning at his home after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born on January 2, 1947, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, the oldest son of the late Dr. Robert T. Gildea and Elizabeth A. Gildea (née Flannery). Tom shared 48 joyful years with his cherished wife, Janet (née Zitto), his heart's companion. In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his beloved children, Dr. Thomas Gildea, of Cleveland Heights, OH, Michael Gildea, of Dallas, PA, Ryan Gildea Guthrie, of Stedman, NC, Darren Gildea, of Chadds Ford, PA, and Leah Gildea Frie, of Vineland, NJ; his brother, Brian Gildea, of Sugar Notch, PA; and his sister, Nancy Gildea Dorzinski, of Wilkes-Barre, PA. He is also survived by seven adored grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Sean and Patrick. Tom took great pride in the lives and accomplishments of his children. He proudly supported their varied pursuits and celebrated each achievement. His greatest joy came when any of his children called or came to visit. He eagerly welcomed them with a heart full of love and a home always open. Tom culminated his career as a general contractor and carpenter, using his skills to build and repair anything for family, friends, and neighbors. He often showed his affection through the generosity of his craftsmanship. His gifts ranged from simple household maintenance to the construction of fine furniture. Tom loved bicycling, sailing, and the search for good wine. He will be remembered for his jovial personality, sense of humor, and devotion to his community. A private service will be held with the family.
