Gaetano Buscemi

Obituary of Gaetano Buscemi

Gaetano Buscemi went home peacefully to his mother, father, and brother Larry after a battle with cancer on Thursday, March 9th at the age of 76. Guy was born in Vineland, New Jersey to Rose and Frank Buscemi. He graduated from Vineland High School in 1958, going on to become a non-commissioned officer in the New Jersey National Guard Company A, 1st Medium Tank Battalion 50th Armor. He joined the Vineland City Police Department in 1963 where he quickly rose through the ranks. One of his major accomplishments was being the first supervisor of the Safe Streets Program, where he led and mentored officers fresh out of the academy, who are now current executive leaders of the Vineland Police Department. Guy retired in 1988 as a Captain after 25 years of dedicated and influential service to the Vineland Police Department. Following his tenure with the Vineland Police Department, Guy became the Commander of the Cumberland County Narcotics Task Force, a position he held until 1992. He continued his law enforcement career as a deputy for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department when he relocated to Florida after leaving the Narcotics Task Force. Guy retired from the Palm Beach Sheriff's Department in 2005. Guy is a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Cumberland Lodge #8 as well as a past member of the New Jersey Narcotics Enforcement Officers Association and The Vineland Exchange Club. He was also a member of the United States Golf Association and the South Vineland Little League. Those who knew Guy knew his devotion for law enforcement was matched only by his passion for golf. Fittingly, Guy compared his first day working at Indian Springs Country Club, as a ranger, to his first day as a patrolman, saying they gave him a cart, a clipboard, a radio and sent him on patrol. Guy went from Indian Springs to Gleneagles Country Club, where he worked in the Pro Shop until January 2016. His love for golf took him to prestigious courses, such as the Pinehurst Country Club in North Carolina and as far as the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland. Guy's devotion to his family and friends stood above all other accomplishments. When you walked into his home, you were family and he greeted everyone by telling them to "call me Dad". He greatly enjoyed cooking and entertaining and loved surrounding himself with friends and family. Guy is survived and will be greatly missed by his loving companion, Maria Veltri, his children; son Guy Buscemi, daughter Donna Mainiero, son Frank Buscemi, his wife Hoa, son Steven Buscemi and his wife Neely. He will also be missed by his grandchildren; grandson Michael Mainiero, granddaughter Nicole Mainiero, granddaughter Lindsey Buscemi-Lipinski, granddaughter Kristin Buscemi, granddaughter Melissa Buscemi-D'Avenio and granddaughter Sofia Buscemi and great-grandchildren; Anthony Mainiero, Hailey Riane Lipinski and Lily Brooke Lipinski as well as a host of cousins and friends.
